     ISE 754 Logistics Engineering
 

Elements of logistics networks. Supply chain design: facility location and allocation; great-circle distances; geocoding. Multi-echelon production and inventory systems; sourcing decision systems. Vehicle routing: exact, approximation, and heuristic procedures; traveling salesman problem; basic vehicle routing problem and extensions; backhauling; mixed-mode transportation system design. 3 credit hours

 
     

Prerequisite
 

ISE 453: Production System Design and ISE 723: Production Planning, Scheduling and Inventory Control or BUS 571: Production and Operations Management, or permission of instructor

 

Course Objectives  

This course will present the fundamental quantitative approaches that are used in the design and control of logistics systems, including modeling issues, design concepts, computational considerations, and the use of the MATLAB software package. This quantitative, or engineering, approach to logistics is meant to complement that of business logistics, which is concerned with the management of physical distribution and procurement processes and relationships. 

 

Course Requirements  

HOMEWORK: 20%

EXAMINATION: 60%, includes take-home and in-class portions

FINAL PROJECT: 20%

SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS: Several software packages, including MATLAB, will be available via the Virtual Computing Lab (VCL). This will allow you access the software outside of the classroom and is an alternative to installing the software on your personal computer. See the course homepage for details.

  • NOTE:  The Flip4Mac plug-in causes problems when viewing Mediasite presentations and should be disabled.

  • Playback of Mediasite presentations on Linux is accomplished via the Moonlight Project, an open source implementation of Microsoft Silverlight.
