ECE 767 Error-Control Coding |
|
An introduction to the theory and practice of codes for detecting and correcting errors in digital data communication and storage systems. Topics include linear block codes, cyclic codes, cyclic redundancy checksums, BCH and Reed-Solomon codes, convolutional codes, trellis-coded modulation, LDPC and turbo codes, Viterbi and sequential decoding, and encoder and decoder architecture. Applications include the design of computer memories, local-area networks, compact disc digital audio, NASA's deepspace network, high-speed modems, communication satellites, and cellular telephony. 3 credit hours |

| Course Requirements | HOMEWORK: There will be six homework assignments, each worth 20 pts. Solutions will be distributed in class. EXAMINATIONS: There will be two exams, each worth 200pts. SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS: MATLAB 7.0 or later, with the Communications Toolbox installed. PROJECTS: Each homework will be accompanied by one or more “mini-projects,” worth 20pts. These projects enable you to demonstrate your understanding of course concepts by solving real-world design problems using MATLAB. |
