Tuition Waiver for North Carolina Residents at Least 65 Years of Age

If you are a North Carolina resident who is at least 65 years of age at the start of the academic semester, you may be eligible for a tuition waiver. More information (including a waiver form) may be downloaded here (requires Adobe Reader ). The regulations are as follows:

  1. To be eligible for the tuition waiver for a particular semester, quarter, term or
other recognized division of the academic calendar, the individual requesting
such waiver of tuition must have attained the age of 65 prior to the
    commencement of such academic term.
  2. The legal residence of an individual requesting such waiver of tuition shall be
determined in accordance with the provision of A Manual To Assist the Public
Higher Education Institutions of North Carolina in the Matter of Residence
Classification for Tuition Purposes, as originally adopted by the Board of
Governors in July, 1973, and as most recently amended on July 21, 1975,
viz., the individual must establish that he or she had maintained a North
Carolina domicile for a period of at least twelve months prior to the particular
    academic term of proposed matriculation.
  3. The determination of whether admission of an individual seeking tuition
waiver under the terms of the statute can be accommodated, consistent with
consideration of "space available”, shall be made by the institution.
  4. Determination of an individual's satisfaction of the prerequisites of age and
legal residence shall be the responsibility of the University; the institution may
require such types and sources of proof of age and legal residence as may be
    deemed appropriate.
  5. The tuition waiver is not applicable to enrollment in non-credit continuing
    education courses.
  6. “Tuition” shall mean the amount charged for registering for a credit hour of
instruction and shall not be construed to mean any other fees or charges or
costs of textbooks. However, nonacademic fees will not be charged and
students enrolled under the tuition-waiver will not be entitled to the services,
facilities, activities and programs supported by these fees.
  7. Applicants must not pre register for courses they desire to attend on a space
available basis without payment of tuition.
