Recognizing the great responsibility that engineers bear, North Carolina law reserves the title of "engineer” for those with extensive education and experience in engineering, along with a demonstrated mastery of the field. In North Carolina, no person may practice engineering, as defined in G.S. 89C, or claim to be a Professional Engineer unless he or she is duly licensed. Licensure for engineers is a multi-step process, involving both qualifying examinations to gain licensure and life-long study to keep credentials current.
