How
do I take the classes?
Taking a distance course is much like taking an on-campus course except
that it is more convenient; but you must be self motivated. Students
watch the lectures, obtain and submit their assignments via the
Internet and have access to the course web sites which have supplemental
materials.
How do I take tests?
Typically two or three tests are administered in each class over the
course of the semester. Students can come to campus the evening of the
exam to take it on site. You may also make arrangements to have your
exams administered off site by a proctor in case you can't make it to
campus. A proctor form and instructions will be sent out to all registered
students at the beginning of the semester.
Do I need to come on campus?
This is truly a distance program. Students do not need to ever come
on campus. In addition to having your test proctored off site, you can
contact your instructors and teaching assistants via email and telephone
for assistance.
What equipment and skills do I need?
Students must have a functioning PC with Windows 98 or later. Students
have completed the certificate with Macintosh or Linux computers but
we are not able to provide any technical assistance for these platforms.
Students must have an intermnet connection and know how to use email,
web browsers, file systems (creating directories, copying files, etc...)
and be able to install software on their machine.
If I am a current NC State Engineering student,
can I participate in distance-delivered courses?
Yes. The Department of Engineering has been a leader in offering courses
in non-traditional formats for many years. Those formats include cable,
video, and Internet classes. Courses will continue to be offered using
those formats as resources permit.
