Graduate Degree Admissions

Applicants for engineering online master’s degree programs go through the same admissions process as all other prospective NC State University graduate students.  You can find our convenient online admission application here: APPLY NOW

Remember as you are completing the admissions application to select the distance option for the program in which you wish to enroll.  For example, to apply for the distance Aerospace Engineering master’s program, choose “Aerospace Engineering – Distance Track – MS,” not “Aerospace Engineering – MS” as your desired program in the drop-down menu of the application.  This is crucial for avoiding administrative snares later on. The Master of Engineering Program is only available for online students.

Administrative Roles in the Application Process

Three separate units are involved in your application and enrollment in an online master’s degree program.  As you begin the application process, it is helpful to keep the roles of these offices in mind:

The Graduate School manages the online admission application process, establishes minimum admission requirements, and sets default application deadlines for all graduate degree programs.

Academic Departments review admission applications and make admission decisions for their programs. Departments may tailor admission requirements or application deadlines to better reflect the needs of their program.

Engineering Online manages the registration process for students admitted to any of the College of Engineering’s online master’s degree programs. In short, prospective students apply through the Graduate School for a degree program administered by the academic department, and, if accepted, register for classes through the Engineering Online office. Engineering Online is also responsible for logistics related to taking an online class through EOL.

Admission Requirements
Because each academic department can have admission requirements that reflect its particular needs, it is important for you to check the specific admissions standards for the program to which you are applying. Go to the Graduate School to determine which option fits your needs.

In general, an application to one of our online master’s degree programs requires:

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in a discipline related to the desired program
  • An undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or greater
  • Name and contact information of three individuals who can recommend you for graduate school
  • A statement of purpose
  • Graduate School admission application
  • Application fee

Some programs may require a specific undergraduate degree, a higher undergraduate GPA, or the Graduate Records Exam (GRE), among other things.  Again, check with your desired program for specific admission requirements or view the online Graduate advising videos at http://mediasite.online.ncsu.edu/online/Catalog/pages/catalog.aspx?catalogId=bd131b9a-d649-4dc6-9feb-ff5ccc404d00

Application Deadlines
Because each academic department can set its own application deadlines, check the deadlines that apply to your desired program.  You can find that listed here: https://grad.ncsu.edu/admissions/deadlines/

International Applicants
With an international student population numbering in the thousands, NC State University’s College of Engineering is committed to international diversity and the global exchange of ideas.  To support this mission, the college strongly encourages qualified foreign nationals to apply for our programs.  However, not all programs are available to individuals residing outside of the United States.

Prospective international students should follow the application deadlines for international applicants indicated by their program, as well as English proficiency testing requirements established by the Graduate School.  Additionally, international applicants must ensure that all supporting documentation, including transcripts and letters of recommendation is in English.

Foreign nationals who are admitted to a graduate degree program must receive clearance from the Office of International Scholar and Student Services (OISSS) before they can enroll in classes.  Instructions for doing this will be provided at the time of admission.

Admission Decisions
Each academic program controls its own application review process and each makes admission decisions on its own timeline.  Once an admission decision has been released, you will receive an e-mail from the Graduate School instructing you to return to the online admission application and view your decision letter.  To learn more about the review process, please contact the academic program to which you applied directly.
