In this course, we will take an expansive view of project management concepts, methods, processes, and tools, with the understanding that project management crosses traditional industry and functional boundaries. We will consider project management from multiple perspectives, including those of executive management, the project manager, the project team, and the larger set of project stakeholders. We will also examine projects from technical and non-technical perspectives

Course Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, you will:

•  Recognize the increasing importance of managing project portfolios and executing projects in
  organizations of all types, sizes and global locations, and be provided the opportunity to experience
  using the concepts, techniques, and decision tools available to project managers.
•  Understand core project management concepts as applied to a variety of industrial contexts, and be
  able to recognize the importance of project portfolio strategy, linking organization strategy to project
  execution, and prioritizing projects for effective resource utilization.
• Appreciate the importance of organizational culture, and you will be able to identify different types
  of organizational structures and decide which ones to apply to project situations.
• Know the basics of using commercially available project management software to organize, monitor
  and control progress on projects.
• Gain a holistic view of projects and their role in the organization, using systems found in practice
  and with an understanding of the behavioral issues all project managers must deal with in practice.
• Gain a basic understanding of the importance of Work Breakdown Structures (WBS) and precedence
  networks in planning, scheduling, and controlling projects.
• Have an awareness of potential resource conflicts and their importance to meeting project cost and
  schedule objectives.
• Be able to interpret a framework for understanding the conceptual use of an Earned Value
  Management System.
• Apply formal project Risk Management techniques and processes.
• Experience virtual, team-based work in analyzing and assessing project problems, principles, and practices. Case study methods will enhance this experience.

NOTE: The textbook can be the 7th or 8th edition. The 8th edition has updated some process information
and has added more content based on Agile development concepts and Hybrid methods. It is the
student’s responsibility to obtain access to a version of the textbook.
