CE 595 Asphalt and Bituminous Materials
 

Asphalt and Bituminous Materials covers:

  •  Introduction to pavements / pavement distress
  •  Asphalt chemistry
  •  Old asphalt grading systems
  •  Superpave Performance Grading (PG) system
  •  Aggregate specification
  •  Previous asphalt mixture design methods
  •  Superpave volumetric mix design
  •  Performance test methods and models

3 credit hours.

 
   

• Prerequisite
 

CE 332 Materials of Construction or equivalent.


• Course Objectives
 

Students completing should demonstrate the ability to:

  1. describe the fundamental properties and behavior of asphalt cements and emulsions;
  2. describe the engineering properties of mineral aggregate used in asphalt concrete;
  3. describe the fundamental properties and behavior of asphalt concrete;
  4. analyze the results of Superpave binder Performance Graded specification tests;
  5. perform Superpave volumetric mixture design;
  6. analyze and understand strengths and weaknesses of various performance test methods; and
  7. analyze and model the results from various performance test methods.
