EED 565 Transforming Engineering Education for Future Researchers

3 Credit Hours

Welcoming graduate students from the College of Engineering, College of Education and other Social Science and STEM disciplines. In this 3-credit-hour engineering education course, students will learn how to develop robust mentoring relationships in research environments. Following the principles of the creation of learning communities and functioning as a community of practice, this course’s goal is not only to develop research skill sets and apply those skills to the identification and conduction of research, but to foster excellence in mentorship.

You will develop technical skills needed for mentorship like the designing of research questions, documentation and presentation of research findings, and development of research proposals as well as essential skills of best practices for mentorship, how to serve as a leader in your research community, and your personal mentorship style.

Prerequisite

BS in Engineering, Education or Sciences.

Course Objectives

By the end of the course students will be able to: Describe the attributes of effective mentoring and research for graduate students in engineering education; Identify and review engineering education scholarship while understanding ethical considerations in research, identify effective mentoring practices in engineering, identify the skills and knowledge that engineering students need to develop to prepare them for successful research careers in engineering education, identify and describe effective mentoring across diverse and inclusive environments; Develop and present a research proposal in engineering.

Research paper, proposal, presentation and project.
