Tuition and Fees

Tuition and Fees are determined by the North Carolina legislature and are subject to change each year. Current information about tuition and fees for Engineering Online courses is provided by the Student Services Center. Refer to the Engineering Online (EOL) sections of the chart.

Please be advised that non-degree studies (NDS) students and distance-track degree students who choose to enroll in an on-campus section of a course will be billed at the on-campus rate for that course. Additional information about these on-campus rates can be found on the Student Services Center website.

Monthly Payment Plan Can Help With Tuition & Fees

Students can now spread out their payments for tuition and fees. NC State’s monthly payment plan provides a way to make payments over time. Enrollment deadline for each semester is typically after the beginning of that semester, but enrolling sooner gives students more time to spread out the payments. Learn about the Monthly Payment Plan.

The Cashier’s Office maintains several tutorials to guide you through the process of managing your tuition bill, reporting external scholarships, and viewing your account:

  • Making an Online Payment. Once you are registered, you must pay your tuition and fees. This tutorial walks you through the process.
  • Reporting External Scholarships. View this if you have a scholarship not from the University. This is not the same as Third Party Sponsorship.
  • Viewing Balance Adjustments. This tutorial describes how to view activity on your student account such as charges, billing, and payments.

Non-degree studies (NDS) students taking only undergraduate-level courses will be charged at the undergraduate tuition rate. However, NDS students who enroll in both graduate and undergraduate-level courses during the same semester will be charged at the graduate tuition rate for all courses in which they enroll that term. Graduate degree students will be charged the graduate tuition rate, even if they are only enrolled in undergraduate courses.

During spring and fall semesters, on-campus degree students will be charged the on-campus stair-step rates which depend on the total number of combined hours (both on campus and distance) enrolled. During the summer session, on-campus degree students will be charged the NDS distance rate for any distance education courses and the on-campus degree rate for any on-campus courses.

Additional Information

Residency and Tuition Exceptions

In-state and out-of-state tuition charges apply to Engineering Online courses. Applicants who believe they qualify for the resident tuition rate must submit the short residency form attached to the online admission application. If the admitting official does not have sufficient information to grant the resident tuition rate at the time of admission, the initial classification will be out-of-state.

Graduate students who believe they are eligible for in-state tuition, but are classified as non-residents for tuition purposes, can petition the Graduate School for a change in classification.

Undergraduate students who believe they are eligible for in-state tuition but are classified as non-residents for tuition purposes can petition the undergraduate and non-degree Residency Officer for a change in classification.

North Carolina state law allows special tuition consideration for some employment circumstances, and other legislated exceptions. Exceptions may be made for military personnel, teachers, and UNC-system employees and others. Learn more about the residency evaluation process and legislated exceptions.

NC State University uses an electronic tuition billing system administered through the MyPack Portal. Every month, the Cashier’s Office sends all enrolled students with a balance due an e-mail notice stating that an eBill is available for viewing in the MyPack portal. Through MyPack, students can pay their tuition bills online or forward the statement to a third party for payment.

Tuition and fees are due prior to the beginning of each semester. Failure to pay all billed charges may cause a student’s schedule to be canceled and prevent registration for future semesters.

Sponsor Billing

Students may be sponsored to attend school by an employer, the military, or another third party. The Cashier’s Office allows authorized third-party sponsors to send documentation verifying their intent to pay a student’s expenses, in lieu of immediate payment. Students must follow the Cashier’s Office procedures for sponsored billing, and will be responsible for any portion of tuition or fees not covered by the sponsoring agency.

Students who have paid tuition and fees for a term, and subsequently drop a course or withdraw from the university during that term, may be eligible for a full or partial refund. Review the Cashier’s Office refund policies to determine if you are eligible to receive a refund, and how the repayment will be processed. Engineering Online students must review EOL’s schedule revision and withdrawal policies before making a change to their course schedule.

Financial Aid

The Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid (OSFA) assists students in applying for and securing financial assistance for educational expenses. OSFA can help with all questions about financial aid, and guide students to available scholarships, grants and loans.

Military Benefits

NC State University works with the US Department of Veterans Affairs to ensure that veterans and military personnel can make full use of any educational benefits to which they are entitled. Students planning to use veterans’ benefits at NC State University should consult the VA website.

Under state law, active-duty military personnel and their dependents who are non-North Carolina residents may still be entitled to the equivalent of in-state tuition. Students using this benefit should refer to the residency and tuition classification website. Students using this benefit will initially be classified as “out-of-state” for tuition purposes. Such students should apply for reclassification once their admission has been finalized.
