EED 595 Societal Foundations in Engineering Education

3 Credit Hours

This course covers the development of engineering systems using methodologies that account for global and cultural issues in society. In addition, this course will examine pedagogies that can help eliminate barriers to success. The course will also provide insight into the disparate impacts of inequities in access to resources for underrepresented populations across the various engineering disciplines. Students will utilize engineering design methodologies to create or enhance products/services for identified user groups.

Prerequisites

Graduate students or undergraduates with Senior standing. Degree or course of study in an engineering discipline (COE) or education with a focus on STEM (CED).

Course Objectives

This course covers the development of engineering systems using methodologies that account for global and cultural issues in society. In addition, this course will examine pedagogies that can help eliminate barriers to success. The course will also provide insight into the disparate impacts of inequities in access to resources for underrepresented populations across the various engineering disciplines. Students will utilize engineering design methodologies to create or enhance products/services for identified user groups.

Course Outline

  • Define global engineering practices while situating them within the context of various engineering disciplines as applied to engineering phenomena.
  • Apply the requisite skills related to engagement with under resourced groups as derived from the course to implement structural changes to engineering and education praxis.
  • Distinguish between the adaptive and pedagogical challenges of engineering education as related to issues of access, resources and suitability and sustainability.
  • Evaluate the conceptual frameworks for implementing effective engineering practices that complement educational pedagogy.
  • Develop high impact engineering education experiences and adapt them to enhance outcomes for engineers interested in improving societal engagement such as research (IRB), Grand Challenges of Engineering, UN Sustainable Development Goals, Study Abroad.
  • Create effective engineering ecosystems that cultivate a sense of community and belonging through impactful global engineering frameworks.
  • Analyze emerging topics related to knowledge systems and global engineering practices through the evaluation of relevant literature in the field (journal articles, conference proceedings, publications from engineering societies, etc.). (Graduate Students Only)
