Welcome to Engineering Online!

Congratulations and Welcome to NC State University!  Engineering Online serves as the College of Engineering’s distance education program. We have provided a quick reference guide to help get you started on your journey with NC State. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Dustin Norris, Asst. Director of Registration and Student Services, via Email (drnorris@ncsu.edu), Phone (919.513.4822), or by Appointment.

Engineering Online

Engineering Online (EOL) is the College of Engineering’s Distance Education Program. With beginnings in 1978, Engineering Online transformed from video-based Engineering Education (VBEE) in 1996 with the state’s first online, real-time, Internet-based distance-education class to students at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. Today, the program oversees 19 master’s degrees, 15 graduate certificates, an undergraduate certificate in computer programming, and site-based programs for undergraduates attending Mechanical or Electrical Engineering Systems in Havelock, N.C., Mechatronics in Asheville, N.C., and the Engineering 2+2 Transfer Program at UNC Wilmington.

Registering for Classes

Engineering Online’s courses are reserved for students enrolled in the Distance Education Programs. Online students may self-enroll through MyPack Portal. If you are unsure how to navigate MyPack Portal, the Student Services Center has created a helpful video tutorial.

All Online Students will have an enrollment hold on their student accounts at the start of the term. To remove this hold, you will need to submit/update your EOL Profile via the EOL Student Profile Form. Once the forms have been submitted, the hold will be cleared. This hold is separate from the advising hold.

Why do you have this hold? The information included in your profile helps Engineering Online with reporting, planning, and operations.

Course Offering

The Catalog for the current and upcoming terms may be found in several different places. The EOL Portal will showcase courses that are currently available for request through EOL, while the Course by Semester webpage provides additional information on all current and upcoming courses, including an overview, prerequisites, instructor details, and outlines. The Course Homepage webpage will show the courses for the current term and share similar information, but may also include links to lectures, syllabi, and Moodle sites.

The University Catalog will display all possible courses as well as those that have been scheduled for the upcoming terms, and typically provides a short description.

Please keep in mind that the catalog for upcoming terms is typically posted in October for Spring and March for Fall. Some Summer term courses will be released in October, but the Summer schedule is subject to change through the remainder of the Fall and Spring terms.

Advisors

Each student enrolled in a Degree program will have an assigned advisor. You may view your assigned advisor(s) by logging into MyPack Portal > Student Homepage > Planning & Enrollment tile > Advisors tab (left-hand navigation menu).

If no advisor is listed, then you may not have assigned one yet. In this case, your advisor defaults to the Director of Graduate Programs (DGP) for your degree. A list of DGP’s may be found here.

NDS Students, your assigned Advisor is Dr. James Nau. Contact information may be found below.

Advising Holds

All new students will start with an advising hold. Advising Holds are holds that are placed on students’ accounts that restrict them from enrolling until they have completed term advisement each semester. You may submit your enrollment request to the EOL Portal, but it cannot be finalized until the Advising Hold has been removed. Please contact your advisor to have holds removed.

NDS Students, while you may not have an Advising Hold associated with your account, you may not be enrolled in EOL courses until cleared by the EOL NDS Advisor, Dr. Nau. This process typically occurs internally after an enrollment request is submitted and doesn’t require additional action on your part, but EOL may reach out if supplemental information is needed, such as transcripts.

Billing & Payemnts

Once courses have been registered, please ensure that you have paid any outstanding Tuition and Fees before the appropriate deadlines.

During the Fall and Spring terms, the University allows all students to pay education expenses monthly, interest-free, through our partner, Nelnet Campus Commerce. The monthly payment plan allows students to spread the cost for a fall or spring term for a fee of $50 per semester. Payment plans are not available for summer terms. The earlier you sign up for this, the more installments you have to spread out the cost (up to 5 months). For additional information, please go here.

Will your employer be paying some or all of the cost? NC State University allows a third party, who commits to paying the students’ tuition and/or other fees, to pay the University directly. Information regarding Third-party Student Sponsorships may be found here.

Notable Policies & Procedures

Continuous Enrollment

Graduate degree-seeking students must remain in active standing by maintaining continuous enrollment status after being admitted and enrolling in classes for the first time. The continuous enrollment mandates that students enroll each Fall and Spring semester, excluding Summer terms, until they graduate. If you are planning not to take any courses during the Fall or Spring semester, please reach out to EOL’s Assistant Director of Registration and Student Services or your Advisor as soon as possible regarding a possible Leave of Absence. Failing to maintain continuous enrollment may result in your being dismissed from the program.

Recommended Courses per Semester

EOL recommends that new graduate students take no more than 6 credit hours in their first semester to help adjust to Distance Education and the Graduate workload. Additionally, students who are employed full-time are also encouraged to take no more than 6 credit hours each semester. If you wish to take more, we ask that you speak with your advisor for an exemption. Exemptions will be granted under certain situations, such as Military requirements or financial aid credit hour minimums.

Non-degree Studies students are limited to a maximum course load of 8 hours per term by the University, which typically equates to 2 courses of 3 credit hours each. Exemptions to this policy must be obtained from Registration and Records.

Graduate Handbook

The Graduate Handbook provides an overview of Graduate School functions and resources, as well as the rules, regulations, and procedures administered by the Graduate School.

It is the responsibility of all graduate students to be familiar with and understand their degree requirements. Students are responsible for fulfilling these requirements.
